C1 The Chasm
C2 Donʼt Tell Me Lies
D1 Zeichnen!
D2 No Love After Midnight
Having provided the opening salvo for Chiwax in the form of the 90ʼs feeling Windy City E.P. the boys are back and this time with 8 quality cuts spread across 2 x 12” records. Using an assortment of machines to hammer out their music, and have fun doing it they
capture a raw feeling of energy and emotion which is all too often polished out of the majority of music these days. Steve Murphy & Die Roh work it out with tight rhythm tracks, and emotive machine soul that conveys a feeling of timeless beauty, juxtaposing lighter
and more hypnotic tracks such as “Star Sign” with the thundering oppression and sinister brooding strings of “Needle Eyes”.
Across the 8 tracks there is a good level of variety from heavy sounding warehouse scorchers to more gentle pieces that let the mind transcend while keeping a groove, and throughout a cohesive feel is maintained. There is not a single example which would not get a good response on the dance floor. Expertly crafted with a mixture of basses from
punchy and solid to etherial and hollow, thundering toms, acid, massive kicks, simple strings, simple vocal samples and a very lo-fi sound, it would be all too easy to start drawing comparisons and referencing people, places, times and fetishisation of machinery - but the focus should be on this LP and the fact its sounds so damn good!
Steven Murphy & Die Roh have once again shown that good results can be gained from the most simple of equipment. If you love house music that is honest - this is one is undoubtably for you.
